University of Warwick

Background

We were recommended by www.matrixfitness.com to the University of Warwick, to specify and refurbish their extensive gym floor. At 1500m2, the gym was vast and dated. The old rubber crumb tiles were severely worn, and the cardio floor had lifted and moved in several places.

We were tasked with coming up with a solution that would be durable, create a wow factor and work with varying floor levels in the gym. A large part of the gym has a raised access floor, so we needed to think of a solution to enable access to the services under the floor in future.

The weights area needed a high impact solution so the members who are heavy lifters wouldn’t break the floor!

Consultation Process

We initially carried out a site survey and meeting to understand how the space was used by members. The site has a massive membership base of over 5000, so it was clear we needed to specify the most durable floors money can buy. We also had to make sure we maintained a flush finish throughout the gym, even though this involved using various products from multiple manufacturers.

University of Warwick also wanted to add some ‘wow’ features like customised branding and cutting-edge materials

Installation Process

Once the old floor was removed, we made sure all the sub floors ere structurally sound, and in certain areas we carried out some repairs. We then installed www.gerflor.co.ukCreation 70 Connect fast-track LVT over the raised access floor in the cardio area- Creation 70 Connect | Gerflor UK

This loose-laid product is 5mm thick, extremely hard wearing and can be uplifted. This means the university could gain access to the raised access floor should they need to. It’s also very rigid, so any movement in the product is minimal.

In the vast weights area (500m2), we installed a 10mm high impact layer and a 40mm rubber tile made by www.regupol.com. This was supplied by www.cmsdanskin.co.uk. We also manufactured our ever-popular XFloor branded lifting platforms which were installed under the Matrix Fitness racks, 10 in total.

We installed our XL Uni Turf in two zones: a stretch/functional area and a lifting/functional area. We customized each area with large format text and Hyrox-size track, and all this was made in-house.

Finally, we installed some backlit halo effect gym mirrors, a 15m wall length in total.

Results

The old gym, although only 7 years old, was very dated and in a bad state of repair. The old rubber crumb tiles were breaking up, and the cardio floor was dirty with hard to remove grime. With only a 3-week window, we have turned an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan.

The gym has also had a complete equipment overhaul, and new feature LED lighting. The atmosphere has completely changed, and member feedback has been fantastic.
